AI receptionist, remodeling

The enquiry that will not say a budget is not an enquiry yet

A remodeling estimate is a site visit, a measure, a drawing and a follow up, and most of them never become a job. An AI receptionist earns its place on a contractor's line by asking the two uncomfortable questions, scope and budget range, in a voice that has no problem asking them for the eleventh time today.

Where they differ

The call that separates a remodeling agent from a voice

Every AI receptionist on this results page books appointments and speaks well. This is the remodeling call where that stops being enough.

The caller says

“We want to redo the kitchen. Can someone come and give us a price?”

What a generic AI receptionist does

A generic AI receptionist says yes and books Tuesday. It does not establish the property, the rough scope, whether there is a budget range in mind, whether there is a designer or drawings already, or whether they are collecting a third quote to beat down a builder they have already chosen. Tuesday afternoon is gone and you found out none of it until you were standing in the kitchen.

What this one does

It asks the scope, the property type, whether there are drawings, the intended timescale, and the budget range, framed the way you would frame it. Where the answer to the range is that they have not thought about it, the call is captured as a lead for you rather than as an estimate on the calendar.

What actually happens

AI receptionist for contractors: what is actually configurable

Each of these is something the product does on a real call. Where it refuses to act, the refusal is the design rather than a limitation.

It asks about money without being awkward about it

The budget question kills half of these calls and every contractor knows it should be asked earlier. Software has no ego about asking it, asks it identically every time, and records the answer including the refusal to answer, which is itself the most useful qualifying signal you get.

It knows what you do not take on

Trades you subcontract, project sizes below your floor, areas you will not travel to, work you have stopped doing. A call that fails one of those is declined politely on the phone with a reason, rather than becoming a site visit you resent.

It handles the supplier and recruiter calls separately

A builder's phone is half enquiries and half people selling you insulation or asking for work. Those are classified and logged rather than escalated, so what reaches you is the call about a project.

It books the estimate into the real diary

Google, Outlook, Apple or CalDAV, respecting the days you keep for site work, with a confirmation text to the client. An estimate that lands as an email request is one you still have to schedule yourself.

The questions

What it asks on a remodeling call

Not a name and a preferred time. Each of these has an operational reason behind it, and every one of them is yours to change.

What's the project, in your own words?

A kitchen, an extension and a whole-house refurbishment are three different companies' worth of work. Scope first.

Do you own the property?

A tenant cannot authorise a remodel. This one question removes a meaningful share of the wasted consultations in this trade.

When are you hoping to start?

Separates a spring project from someone who is idly wondering, and it decides whether the consultation happens this month or next.

Have you set a budget range?

Asked plainly, once. Not to disqualify, but so nobody spends a morning designing an $80k kitchen for a $20k budget.

Have you got drawings, or are we starting from scratch?

Plans in hand is a completely different sales process from an idea, and it decides who should attend.

Have you got other quotes already?

Tells you whether this is a first conversation or a price comparison, which changes what the consultation should be.

Safety

What it will never do on a remodeling call

You are handing your phone to software that talks to your customers when you cannot. These are the lines it does not cross, and the exact words it uses instead.

It never prices a project

Nothing about a remodel is quotable from a description — the price is in the walls, the services, the levels and the finish. The agent captures the budget the customer volunteers and books the consultation, and it does not repeat a per-square-metre figure it read somewhere.

What it actually says

“I couldn't give you a real number without seeing it, and a wrong one would just waste both our time. The consultation's free and you'll get a proper written quote.”

It won't commit to a start date

Your schedule depends on the jobs currently running, the ones that have overrun and the trades you can get. The agent books the consultation, not the build, and it says so — a promised start date that slips is how a job that went well still ends badly.

What it actually says

“I can book the consultation for Tuesday, but I'm not going to promise you a start date before we've priced it — I'd rather be right than quick.”

Structural questions go to a person

Whether a wall can come out, whether the foundations will take it, whether it needs building control or planning — the agent captures the question and routes it. It does not offer an opinion on structure, because being wrong about that in a sales call is how a project starts on a false premise.

What it actually says

“Whether that wall's structural isn't something I should guess at. I've made a note and Elena will go through it properly on Tuesday.”

The honest answers

What contractors say before they say yes

In the words they are usually put in. Where the objection is right, it says so.

“Asking for a budget on the first call loses people.”

It loses the ones you were going to lose after a free site visit, which is later and more expensive. The agent asks it the way you would, with a range rather than a number, and where the caller will not answer that is captured rather than treated as a refusal to proceed.

“Every job is different. Software cannot scope them.”

It does not scope. It records scope in the client's own words, plus the property, the timescale and the range, and hands you a call sheet. The judgement stays with you; what changes is that you have the facts before you commit a half day.

“I would rather talk to clients myself.”

You still do. This answers the calls that arrive while you are on a roof or in a meeting with your hands full, which today go to voicemail and then to whoever picks up first among the other three names on the list.

FAQ

AI receptionist, remodeling, answered

What does it ask on a remodeling enquiry?

Scope in their own words, property type and ownership, whether there are drawings or a designer, intended timescale, and the budget range. Those five answers are the difference between an estimate and a lead.

Will it turn work away?

Where you have told it to. Project sizes below your floor, trades you do not carry, areas outside your travel. Declining on the phone with a reason is better for both sides than a wasted visit.

Does it quote?

No. It states your terms for an estimate and explains that a price follows a measure. It will not put a number on a kitchen from a description.

What about the sales calls?

Suppliers, recruiters and cold callers are classified and logged rather than transferred, and robocalls are identified and never billed.

What does it cost?

From $99 a month, flat, with unlimited call flows and a monthly talk time allowance. There is a free tier for building and testing the agent in the browser first.

Comparing against a human answering service instead?

That is a different question with a different answer, and it has its own page: the answering service for contractors, with a full remodeling call played second by second.

Trades that answer the phone the same way

The same archetype, which is what the product actually branches on. Every trade has one of these pages.
